Hello, I’m Jo Ara. Shall we travel into the great myths born from human imagination? Today, we journey to the land of dragons, fire, and fury—ancient China. It’s the tale of Zhu Rong, the God of Fire who burned the sky, and Gong Gong, the God of Chaos. Let’s go.
아득한 옛날, 하늘과 땅이 아직 분리되지 않았던 시절, 세상을 다스리는 신들은 끊임없이 싸움을 벌였습니다. 그중에서도 가장 격렬했던 전쟁이 바로 불의 신 주용과 물의 신 공공의 전투였죠. Long ago, when heaven and earth were still one, the gods who ruled the world waged endless wars. Among them, the fiercest battle was fought between Zhu Rong, the God of Fire, and Gong Gong, the God of Water.
공공은 분노의 신이자 물의 주인이었습니다. 그는 인간의 세계를 통제하려는 천제를 향해 반역을 일으켰죠. 이에 불의 신 주용이 나섰습니다. 그의 눈은 태양처럼 붉었고, 손에는 타오르는 창이 들려 있었죠.
Gong Gong, the Lord of Water and Rage, rebelled against the Heavenly Emperor who sought to control the mortal realm. Then Zhu Rong, the Fire God, rose to stop him. His eyes blazed like the sun, and he held a spear made of pure flame.
하늘과 땅이 흔들릴 만큼 치열한 전투 끝에, 공공은 패배의 분노로 ‘불주의산’ 즉 천지의 기둥이라 불리던 거대한 산에 머리를 들이받았습니다. 그 순간, 하늘이 기울고 땅이 갈라졌습니다. 서쪽 하늘은 꺼지고, 동쪽 땅은 솟아올랐죠. 그 틈으로 불과 용암이 솟구쳐 오르며 세상은 처음으로 ‘화산’을 보게 되었습니다.
After a battle so fierce that heaven and earth trembled,Gong Gong, in a fit of rage, rammed his head into Buzhou Mountain, the great pillar that held up the sky. In that instant, the heavens tilted, and the earth split apart. The western sky dimmed, the eastern lands rose— and through the cracks, fire and molten lava burst forth, giving birth to the world’s first volcano.
이후 주용은 하늘의 불을 진압하기 위해 자신의 불꽃을 거두고, 그 힘을 지하 깊은 곳에 봉인했습니다. 하지만 인간의 욕망이 그 불을 건드릴 때마다, 주용의 분노가 다시 깨어나 산이 폭발한다고 전해집니다. 그래서 중국의 옛사람들은 화산이 폭발할 때 이렇게 속삭였죠.
To restore balance, Zhu Rong gathered the raging fires and sealed their power deep beneath the earth. But whenever human greed disturbed that sacred fire, Zhu Rong’s fury would awaken once more—and the mountains would erupt in flame. Thus, when volcanoes roared, the ancient Chinese would whisper in awe,
“주용이 다시 깨어났다.”
“Zhu Rong has awakened.”
하늘과 땅의 균형을 지키려 했던 불의 신—그의 숨결은 지금도 중국 남쪽의 화산지대, 윈난과 하이난의 용암 속에 살아 있다고 합니다.
The Fire God who sought to balance heaven and earth—his breath still lingers in the molten veins of southern China, in the fiery lands of Yunnan and Hainan.
